About 400 species of Scatopsoidea have been described so far worldwide but many others are still awaiting description or discovery. One can reasonably expect that several thousands of species are living worldwide. Tropical faunas are particularly poorly known but even in better investigated areas like Europe many new taxa remain undescribed.
